I first met LLoyd as a student at the NSAC in 1971 I think it was. Lloyd lived right across the hall from me in Fraser House. As it turned out, Lloyd was a good student and I was not.
These were formative years for all of us. I'll always remember the cohort of Newfoundlanders to which Lloyd belonged. I was friends with them all. We were all friends. It was a wonderful time. Of course we were not all the same, but we all got along despite our differences.
I sort of stayed in touch with Lloyd over the years through emails and friends in common. We spoke a few times. Lloyd once told me that I had a profound impact on him. I was a bit of a rebel. I had long red hair. I partied a lot and I played the guitar. Apparently Lloyd had never seen anything quite like me. He said to me years later, "imagine the impact the sight of you had on an innocent Newfoundland boy on the mainland for the first time." I shudder to think. We got along very well.
I graduated and carried on with my life as did we all. I've done reasonably well. Here's the thing though. If it wasn't for LLoyd I would have flunked out of College. For reasons known only to himself, Lloyd decided to help me with my studies. He would asvise me when it was unwise to skip a class. He would let me copy his notes. He would sit down and explain difficult concepts on topics ranging from statistical analysis to feeding chickens. Countless times he came to my rescue. I have always been beholden to Lloyd and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to thank him more than once in the years in between then and now.
I want to thank his family. I am so sorry he is gone. To all his friends and family I express my sadness and my condolences. I hope you are well.
