Obituary of Ronald Power

Ronald Joseph Power

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Ronald Joseph Power at St. Clare’s Hospital on September 19th,2024, surrounded by his family. He passed away peacefully after a stroke on September 14th, 2024.

Dad was born in St. John’s to Mike and Mary (Walsh) Power on June 25, 1937. He went to school in St. John’s and was a proud graduate of St. Pat’s High School. In his younger years, he excelled at basketball, the occasional scrap, and was a softball and dart player in later years.

Dad became a bayman with a move to Holyrood, after he met Mom. They were married on June 1, 1963, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last summer.

Dad worked for Nan and Pop’s company Fleetline Busses for many years while Mom was the public health nurse in the Conception Bay Centre area for 25 + years.

Dad was a businessman, from start to finish. Over the years he owned the grocery store in Holyrood and when that burned in the early 1970’s, he built what would be the liquor store in the same location. He had contracts with Canada Post for postal delivery and at one point in time, he was a partner in a fish processing plant. For 25+ years, he had contracts with the school board transporting a special group of special needs kids to and from school. Oh, how he loved those kids.

His love was bluefin tuna fishing in the waters of Conception Bay. For over 30 + years he captained and owned chartered boats, and in 1968 caught the largest bluefin tuna in Newfoundland waters for that year, weighing in at 742 lbs.

In the 1980’s, when bluefin tuna were caught and discarded in Newfoundland, Dad and business partner Paul Murphy (1960- 2022) started the commercial fisheries for bluefin tuna in Newfoundland, buying from the local fisherman and selling to their brokers in Boston and Japan.

Dad was a proud member of the Star of the Sea Association in Holyrood for many years and volunteered endless hours.

Mom and Dad loved Holyrood and lived there until 2016, when they moved to their condo in St. John’s to have easier accessibility to hospitals.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Mike and Mary, brothers Justin, Cyril (sister-in-law Susanne), Bill, Gerry, his father and mother-in-law Wilbur and Christine Furey, brother-in-law Phil Furey, sister-in-law Ann Marie Furey, sister-in-law Jane Power, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Leaving to mourn are his wife Marie (Furey) and children, Chris (Bonnie), Keith (Colette) and Paul (Pam).

His siblings Mike Power and Dianne Duff, his sisters-in-law Maureen Power, Emily Power, Tina (Bob) Coleman, Barb Furey, his brother-in-law Will Furey and Joe (Shirley) Furey, Gerry (Glenys) Furey.

He also leaves behind his 10 grandchildren (Jeff, Kirsten, Kyle, Meghan, Jillian, Adam, Erika, Jocelyn, Jennifer, Gregg and6 great grandchildren (Rhett, Rhea, Emmett, Easton, Everly, Vivian).

Over the years Dad had endless trips to the hospitals, and we thank each and every health care professional for their love, patience, and professionalism over the years. Thanks to Dr. Furey, Dr Penton, the wonderful group at the pacemaker clinic at the Health Sciences, Dad’s family doctors over the years, and the wonderful staff on 4E at St Clair’s hospital for their professional care.

Thanks to all of you for being so good to Dad for so many years.

Mom and Dad moved into Tiffany Village in 2021, and we would like to thank them for their care for Dad over the last 3 years.
