Obituary of Jean Symon David

David, Jean Symon Jean Symon David passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Complex in St John's on February 15, 2018. Will be forever missed by her loving two daughters Lorraine Quinlan (John) of Conception Bay South and Heather Harnett (David) of Tillsonburg, Ontario. Jean was a proud, loving grandmother of Stephen and Stephanie Quinlan. Jean will be sadly missed by niece Linda and Bill Wells of Kirriemuir, Scotland and their two daughters Gillian and Judith, as well as a large circle of family and friends. Predeceased by her parents Lizzy and Stewart David, brother's Bob, Jack, Stewart Alec, sister's Meg and Bet from Scotland. Born in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland on March 11, 1930, Jean studied at Arbroath Infirmary, Angus Scotland and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1951. Jean continued her studies at St John's Hospital, Leeds, England and became a State Certified Midwife in 1953. She completed her District Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1958, she applied for a post as a Nurse Practitioner with the Newfoundland and Labrador government and accepted a two year contract to work in the out ports of the province. She arrived on a boat called the "Nova Scotia". After several weeks working in St John's, Woody Point, Come by Chance and other cottage hospitals, she was sent to St Bride's - the Cape Shore. After a short time Jean was transferred to Greenspond, Bonavista Bay and spent a year there. In 1960, she returned to St Bride's where she worked as a Public Health Nurse and later attended Memorial University in St John's during 1975-1976 completing post graduate studies in Community Health. She continued serving the St Bride's-Cape Shore Communities until she retired in 1984 due to health reasons. Jean loved her job and was highly respected by the people she was meant to serve. To this day she is fondly remembered as "The Nurse" on the Cape Shore and is forever memorialized at Fatima Academy's Royal Play Park of Memories where a plaque of dedication rests in her name. In her retirement years, living with her daughter Lorraine in Conception Bay South, she enjoyed her loving grand children, tending her flower gardens and reading. In October, 2013, Jean resided at the Admirals Coast Retirement Home in Kelligrews, enjoying the many activities provided as well as the beautiful view from her room looking onto Conception Bay. Jean will be dearly missed by the staff and residence of Admirals Coast. Jean will be sadly missed and forever remembered as a giving and humble person. Visitation will take place in the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews, Sunday, February 18, from 10 AM to 9 PM. Funeral service will be held at St. Thomas of Villa Nova Church, Manuel's on Monday February 19 at 11 AM. Flowers will be graciously accepted or donations can be made to the Canadian Arthritis Society or to a charity of one's choice.
