Obituary of Gerald Morgan Greenslade

Greenslade, Gerald Morgan - born October 4, 1920, Long Pond, Conception Bay South. Passed peacefully away September 23, 2016, in his 96th year at the Caribou Memorial Veteran's Pavilion. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Adeline Butler Greenslade; his parents, Charles and Alfreda; his brothers, Reginald, Matthew, Charles, Cyril, Douglas, Frederick, Dermond, and Lloyd; sisters, Molly, Emma, and Bessie. He is survived by one sister, Elsie; by his children, Lola (Reg) Leonard, Derek (Lana) Greenslade, Glenda (Phil) Orth, and Douglas (Kim) Greenslade. His grandchildren Mandy, Tina, Cheryl, Colette, Nicole, Megan, Angela, Hayley, Ashley, Bradley, Jeffrey, Katie; and great granddaughters Ava and Astrid. Gerald Morgan Greenslade joined the Royal Navy in March, 1940 during WWII and served honourably until 1946 - travelling an estimated 200,000 kilometres by sea to the United Kingdom, Africa, the Mediterranean, Middle East, and far East. He lived the rest of his life in Newfoundland where he founded the company, Greenslades Construction Ltd. His life was one filled with service to his family and to his community. He was instrumental in the construction of Branch 50 of the Royal Canadian Legion where he served as President, Service Officer, and life member; Masonic (charter member Lodge Conception; member of Avalon Lodge and of the Royal Order of Scotland; member of St. John's Scottish Rite Freemasons, 33rd degree Mason); in 2007 he received the John Ross Matheson award, the highest award bestowed by the Masonry Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Canada. He has received the Queen's Silver Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. He was a member of the St. John's Shrine Club; member of the Royal Order of Scotland; member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association; and an honorary member of the Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. He led the rapidly growing community of Conception Bay South (CBS) into incorporation and in 1973 he was appointed the Town's first mayor where he served voluntarily from 1973 to 1977. He was a past Lion's Citizen of the Year, the first president of the Conception Bay South Chamber of Commerce, Charter Member of the CBS Business Association, the first Commander in Chief and Co-founder of the Newfoundland and Labrador Consistory, as well as honorary Inspector General of the Supreme Council of Canada. He was also the first veteran to be honoured as part of the town of CBS Veteran and Family Community Covenant in 2012. In his younger years he enjoyed boating and served as a member of the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. Gerald received much recognition for his outstanding service to his country, his province, and his community where he received several awards some of which included Citizen of the Year (1978, CBS Lion's Club); the Palm Leaf to the Meritorious Medal (1972, the highest award the Royal Canadian Legion can bestow upon any of its members) and was given the Commemorative Medal for the 125 anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in 1992. A special thanks to his second family, the staff of the Caribou Memorial Veteran's Pavilion for their loving care and attention given during his time there. Their love and kindness will always be remembered. Resting at Hickey's Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews, Conception Bay South. Visitation: Sunday 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Funeral service to take place Tuesday, September 27 at 2 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, Foxtrap, Conception Bay South.
