I remember Boyd fondly from our school days together and our time together on the various school teams. Boyd was always good for a laugh and a true gentleman. He will be missed. So sorry to learn of Boyds passing,I was his coach when he played on the 1958 st. john's pee wee all star team and i recall recently when we has a team reunionn at the captial hotel on kenmount road that boyd was there and we had a great time meeting all the members ond taking about old times but the next time we had a reunion at bally hally, boyd was not there and we found out that he was sick and i learned later when atttending the fieldian lunchions that he was sick again, we live so close togetherand we never got to see each other only on special ocasions its all a part of getting old i guess, i am so sorry i never go to his funeral or even new he had passed away untill it was all over, please accept my sincere sympathy

Elaine and family. Sincerest condolence on Boyd's passing. I remember Boyd as a young hockey player having coached him in minor hockey in the early 1950's. One of my fondest memories is his participation on a team that appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York City. In my 4+ years at Computers for Schools NL, I reported directly to Boyd Summers, Chair of the Board. I knew him only as a kind, patient, and even-tempered boss. He was steadfast in his gentleness, yet his vision remained strong and clear. For me, these were the "fresh out of university" career-forming years. I am truly grateful to have worked with Boyd during this time, and I feel that I grew both personally and professionally under his leadership.
A tireless volunteer, Boyd was ever-dedicated to the needs of others. Giving was something he did on a daily basis. He was always on the move. If I needed to reach him, I knew I had to call his cell phone. I called it that much that I think I can still recall the number some ten years later. I remember very vividly calling him one time, and when he picked up, I could hear the noise of wind and traffic in the background.
"Where are you today, Boyd?!" I shouted into the phone.
"Oh, just on the side of the Trans Canada picking up garbage," he answered very casually.
He was always up to something, but always had time to chat with me when I needed him. Boyd gave, and the world received. His good heart was matched only by that of his wife. Elaine, I cry with you and for you. Take care of yourself in your grief.

Oh, man, that's such sad news indeed. A good guy and a hearty Pioneer known for his leadership and quick wit. Sharon and I recall having dinner with Boyd and Elaine in St. John's on our last visit. He regaled us with golfing anecdotes, including his trip to the Masters, and 'encouraged' us to try that provincial delicacy, deep fried cod tongues. We always considered it the second stage of being Screeched in, making us certifiable honorary Newfoundlanders! Our very best regards and sincere condolences to Boyd's family, Gary and Mary Lane and Pioneers everywhere. He will be missed.

What can one say about Boyd except, "What a guy!" He was first of all outgoing and friendly, always with a friendly smile, a sharp mind and a quick wit. He worked tirelessly at not only his job but in the field of volunteerism doing all he could for his community. He was a moving force in the Telephone Pioneers in Newfoundland and Labrador for many years. If a Pioneer group needed something or wanted to get something done they could count on Boyd to do it or at the very least tell them where and how to accomplish their goal.
On a personal note he was a good friend, a pleasure to work and associate with including while volunteering or playing golf or many other activities. While Boyd and I haven't had much face to face contact over the past few years he has always been not only helpful but a real inspiration. He will be truly missed by his friends and associates.
Sincere condolences go out to Elaine and the rest of Boyd's family from my family and I. Please take comfort in knowing that many people will share your grief in some small way and will continue to hold and celebrate fond memories of Boyd.

The news at first brought sadness, but then, quickly, a smile…for smile is what one typically did when in the presence of Boyd. A true friend and a kind and giving person, good times and Boyd were never too far apart.
Worked with Boyd…had (quite) a few beers with Boyd…played golf with Boyd…enjoyed Newfoundland's finest and freshest lobster with Boyd. No matter the setting…same old Boyd. You will be missed, my friend, but the fond memories will linger.
In my hometown of New York City, there are certain compliments reserved for the special ones. "He's good people," they say, or "He's a good man." Those words are spoken with purpose and conviction and there is no higher praise in those parts. To that end, I raise a glass in Boyd's honor and say: "You're good people, Boyd…and a good man." God bless.
